Our History

Levandoski - Grillo Funeral Home & Cremation Service is a family owned and operated funeral, natural-green burial, cremation service provider. Our mission is to provide compassionate care at your time of loss with personable, individualized service and a guiding hand. We will honor your loved one and family with dignity, respect and personal attention to every detail. The owner and manager, Nicholas J. Grillo, together with Michael Z. Levandoski, have assisted thousands of families in honoring the lives of their loved ones.

From our beginning in 1939, Theodore Levandoski Sr. (1961) dedicated himself to providing comforting services in a time of need. His son, Theodore Levandoski Jr. (2009) continued on in his father’s footsteps, caring for families with the same quality of service. Today, although passed on to a new owner,  third generation Michael Z. Levandoski, maintains this inherited tradition with every individual funeral service. He still remains an integral part of the Levandoski - Grillo Family. For more than 70 years, the Levandoski Family has served the Bloomfield Community, now partnered with the Grillo Family in continuing to provide excellence in funeral service.

The Grillo Family originates from Jersey City. As with any other large Italian American Family, their members have spread out to Lyndhurst, Bloomfield, Nutley and the Montclair region through the generations.

Our Pledge

We are funeral service professionals with a sincere desire to reward each family who has placed their trust and confidence in us by being attentive to every detail, displaying the highest level of courtesy and compassion and providing the greatest measure of respect for your wishes.

We pledge to be a professional resource for the benefit of the entire community and accept this unique responsibility to honor the dignity of life, to aid the family in time of grief and to encourage remembrance with each family within its own traditions, culture and financial means.

We believe that it's our job to provide extraordinary, personalized opportunities to help you celebrate the life of your loved one. Our hope is that you find joy in the way you choose to honor and remember that wonderful life.

Nicholas J Grillo

Nicholas J Grillo, Owner/Manager

Nicholas J. Grillo was born on May 1, 1981 in Jersey City to Salvatore Grillo & Teresa (Spaldo) Grillo. A resident of North Arlington since 1983, he has spent most of his life in Jersey City. A graduate of Holy Rosary School, Jersey City, he was raised in a close-knit Italian American community, the center of which was Holy Rosary Church, the first Italian parish in the State of New Jersey. It was at Holy Rosary and in downtown Jersey City where Nick, at a young age, met many of the treasured friends he still has today.

In 1995, he went on to Queen of Peace High School, North Arlington. By the age of 17, Nick accepted his first position as a Parish Music Director/Organist for St. Joseph's Church, East Orange. This was the beginning of many years in Liturgical Music and active participation in the Church, both in music and in fundraising.

In 1999, at the age of 18, he was named Chairperson of Holy Rosary Church’s Annual Italian Street Festival, today known as La Festa Italiana – Jersey City, a title he still holds today sharing, it with two others. During his 15 years with the festival, it has grown into one of New Jersey's premiere Italian-American Street Festivals, drawing thousands of visitors each day to this 5 day “feast” of great food, entertainment and summer fun (www.LaFestaItalianaJC.com). Also in 1999, Nick took the next steps in his education, entering Caldwell College to obtain his BA in Music & Liturgical Studies. During his time at Caldwell College, Nick had the opportunity to work as Music Director of his home parish Holy Rosary Church, Jersey City. As he assumed this position of responsibility in the parish that was so important to Nick during his formative years, Nick increasingly dedicated himself to Holy Rosary and to the community. He has become an integral participant in numerous aspects of parish life at Holy Rosary, always fighting for the parish’s success and wellbeing.

In 2005, he graduated from Caldwell College (now Caldwell University) with his B.A. in Music. After serving for several years as Music Director and Organist for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Ironbound section of Newark and St. Cecilia Church in Kearny, Nick returned in October of 2013 as the Organist and Music Director of his parish, Holy Rosary Church, Jersey City.

Having developed a great love for serving others through his music ministry and through his work with La Festa Italiana, Nick, even early in his career, sought out additional ways to share his talents. Immediately after he graduated from Caldwell College, Nick decided to consider a future in Funeral Directing. In 2005, he began his internship with the Introcaso- Angelo Funeral Home in Jersey City. Working here gave Nick the opportunity to serve his downtown community and the people of Holy Rosary in their time of need. He entered the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, in New York City and graduated in August of 2007.

In March 2015, he completed his purchase of the Levandoski Funeral Home of Bloomfield, New Jersey. Now known as Levandoski-Grillo Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Nick is looking forward to serving the many families of Bloomfield, Montclair, Glenridge, Nutley and surrounding areas as many are of Jersey City decent. He will remain a part time Funeral Director with the Introcaso Angelo Funeral Home of Jersey City. Nick, compassionate and sensitive to the needs and feelings of grieving families, strives to always give thoughtful service and to help alleviate their burden at their time of need.

A civic-minded individual, Nick has devoted nearly all of his spare time to various organizations throughout Jersey City and Hudson County. He works tirelessly to promote Italian American heritage, Jersey City, and his parish. He holds various positions in numerous organizations, including the newly-established Columbus Day Parade Committee of Jersey City, through which he, with the help of his executive board, has successfully grown the parade and committee from scratch. He is the immediate Past- President of the Jersey City Chapter of UNICO, a national Italian American Service Organization, which strives to promote "Service above Self", something Nick has always tried to achieve. UNICO Jersey City has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity during his tenure. He was honored in 2011 by the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage and Festival Committee, as a "Puerto Rican for the Day" in the 51st Annual Parade, for his support and contributions to their cultural events.

In addition to the many committees on which he serves, Nick also contributes generously to other worthy non-profit organizations in Jersey City and Hudson County. Some of the causes in which Nick takes special interest and to which he has made noteworthy contributions are the Hyacinth Foundation of New Jersey, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Coolies Anemia, Hospice and Palliative Care, and educational scholarship funds. He attributes his ability to give so generously of his time, talent, and treasure to the tremendous support of his parents, family, friends, and committee members.

Nicholas currently serves as:
Co-Chairman of La Festa Italiana – Jersey City, Inc.
President of the Jersey City Columbus Day Parade Committee
Past President of UNICO - Jersey City Chapter
President of the Hudson County Funeral Directors Association
